What Is Polyester Taffeta?
Polyester Taffeta is a light woven fabric with an eye-catching sheen and crisp texture, often used for dresses, lingerie and costumes as well as curtains and bags. Constructed of Cupra rayon or polyester yarn twisted tightly enough to give it its crisp texture, Taffeta may be dyed either before or after weaving and may even contain flame retardant or antistatic chemicals depending on its manufacturer.
Taffeta fabric production can be an intricate process. First, ethylene reacts with petrol at high temperature to form monomer alcohol; this chemical then is used to form polyester, and can later be woven into fabric to form taffeta fabric.
Taffeta production involves multiple processes, including spinning, extrusion and drawing. Spinning involves pulling molten polyester through a spinneret before allowing it to cool; once spun yarn has been created it is then twisted before cooling again before being drawn (stretching out into long ribbons for drawing and dyeing or treatment with flame retardant or antistatic substances).
Taffeta can be made from various materials, including silk, cotton and polyester. However, rayon or polyester textile fibers have become the more economical choice these days for weaving taffeta fabric - though silk may remain more luxurious due to its luxurious reputation. Silk can also be found in umbrellas and college hoods among other consumer products.
Taffeta fabric has long been one of the top choices when it comes to creating dresses, especially bridesmaids' and prom gowns. Women find its crisp texture appealing while the way that it rustles when moving can give an eye-catching, glamorous appearance. Some even choose this lightweight material for wedding and party gowns since its appeal cannot be overstated.
Taffeta fabric is easy to manipulate thanks to its soft hand and smooth surface, as it doesn't easily wrinkle. Ironing should not be necessary; however, if washing this type of material it is crucial that you follow manufacturer care instructions for its upkeep. Machine washing taffeta fabric should be avoided as this could cause it to stretch or shrink, so hand-washing it is preferable and should then be dried in a cool location after being hung up for drying. Wringing fabric before drying it is key, as doing so can damage its fabric and alter its form. If you plan on wearing this type of fabric frequently, purchasing a lining could also extend its lifespan and protect its lifespan.
